Tom let the audience know that he had a jet on standby so he could hurry back if she went into labour.  With the whole silence during childbirth thing, maybe he figures it’ll be easier on both himself and Katie if he’s not there to yell at when the unmedicated pain starts.  And then there’s the female genitalia thing.
