The Shaggy Dog Boycott Didn’t Work
Despite my best efforts, many people unwittingly went to see Disney’s remake of ‘The Shaggy Dog’. The numbers are not staggering, but it looks like the movie may actually make a profit. This sends the wrong message to the people who decide which movies get made.
Maybe boycotts aren’t the way to go. Maybe I should be urging people to repeatedly see the kind of movies that Hollywood should be making more of. The problem with that strategy is that those movies are showing on less than half the screens that the talking dog ones are taking up.
Another option to make the world of movies better is to have children shielded from all the big budget advertising. My kids don’t watch TV and they made the decision, based on online reviews, to go see ‘The Pink Panther’ instead of ‘The Shaggy Dog’. They loved that movie, and, yes, it was a remake.
