Pay Attention to Your Teens
This post is going to be a review of a very positive sounding treatment center for teens with problems including drug addiction. First I want to say to all parents reading this that you are one of the best resources that your child has and you should always make a point of engaging your kids. Don’t let them shut themselves off from you even if they are putting a huge effort into shutting you out. And don’t wait until they are in their teens to be wary of all the warning signs, kids are being drawn to inappropriate and self destructive behavior at younger ages these days.
It is the conclusion of many studies that children learn more from and are influenced more by their peers than their parents. What you can do as parents is maintain some control over who those peers are.
After saying all that, the sad fact is that teen drug abuse is a problem that many parents are faced with and they do not have the resources or knowledge to turn things around by themselves. Places like Echo Malibu are a great option.
I read their philosophy and it is broken down to these four words, Empowerment, Choices, Hope and Opportunities.
Here’s something positive, the center donated treatment for teens that were impacted by Hurricane Katrina.
Looking at the newsletters, it seems that the center is very much into outreach and community. I think that must help remove the stigma that might be attached to having sought rehab treatment. And encouraging positive involvement among their residents should have a lasting effect. I know that when I was a teen, the opportunity to abuse drugs and alcohol was internally subjected to a quick cost benefit analysis each time, I think the cost tends to go up a lot when you have a lot of positive community involvement and some responsibilities that you take some pride in.
The Governor of California has praised the Echo Malibu. That must tell you something.

Great posting! It’s good to see that you’re trying to help parents to help their teens. It’s important that parents stay informed and stay active in maintaining a relationship with their teen that allows for discussions about drug abuse. Teens live in a world where drugs are present in so many places and it’s important that parents understand this.
I wrote a blog post awhile back that focuses on helping parents to actually talk to their teens: it can be awkward or hard to talk to your teen about certain subjects. The goal of my article was to give parents a bit of a blueprint for talking to their teens about drug abuse.
The article is at http://understandmyteen.com/blog/teen-drug-abuse-prevention-starts-with-parents-part-i.html and I think it would be a good supplementary tool to this posting in your blog.
GREAT posting. Keep up the great work.
