When I was working a summer job on the payroll of the federal government of Canada, one of my duties was picking up litter for a couple of hours every morning. Anyone who has done this inevitably gets an idea of what the main sources of litter are. Fast food litter wasn’t that high on the list because I was working at an airport. Coffee cups were number one.

After working for a few summers at that job, I think my eyes are permanently trained to spot and identify litter. I am certain that McDonalds is the biggest single source of litter where I am currently living. I am glad that they stopped using styrofoam years ago. I think that Mcdonalds should hire one person in every major market to patrol the areas where this litter tends to show up. The person should be dressed in a Ronald costume and he should be empowered to issue citations to people that litter. I am not sure whether or not he should be armed, that would vary by jurisdiction.
