Tiles are Beautiful

This picture is a detail of a floor laid by Roman craftsmen in England in around AD 325. It is a testament to how durable tile flooring can be.

I have visited the ruins of a Roman Villa and viewed tile floors that are from the first century BC. In fact the tile mosaics are the main intact features of the museum that I visited. Many of the stone pillars are partially or fully reconstructions.

Besides being durable, tiles made from different materials can create a stunning visual effect. I looked around and found the term that I was looking for to describe the effect. The best words to describe what you can achieve with a product like glass tiles is depth of field. A common motif in ancient times was a simple pattern of black and white trapezoids.

Glass kitchen tile can be used to make complex or simple patterns for walls and counters. The tiles are an attractive alternative to ceramic and only cost a bit more. They can be used as a accent to add a unique detail alongside stone or ceramic.

I can’t speak from experience as far as installing tile or purchasing tile. I can however talk about living with tile. Impermeable tile materials on your walls, counters and floors is a great idea. I live in a place with nothing but tile floor and I love it. It is nice to look at and it cleans easily. Glass tiles can make a space appear brighter and bigger.

Floorzbuzz.com is an online resource that homeowners can use to shop for materials that have previously been marketed to architects and designers. When I was looking at the selection of tiles on the site I was tempted to spend a 1/2 hour designing a pattern using the different sizes and colors. I think I might farm that job out to my kids, they have a better design sense than me anyway.

  1. How can I clean the grout between the tiles on my kitchen floor?
I’ve recently moved into a new house. The ceramic tiles of my kitchen floor are beautiful, but the grout between them is filthy. Normal household cleaners don’t do the trick. How can I whiten the grout, without ruining the floor?
