Total Dismay

A Business Card Reader

Posted in Cool Stuff by totaldis on the September 29th, 2007

I am curious about optical character recognition technology. My old job as a lumber grader involved handwriting symbols on the face of the wood. Farther down the line there was a camera that was connected to some old school shape recognition program. We had to be pretty exact with our symbols.

Scanshell-Store.com uses OCR technology in its business card reader. This device is pretty cool, you just stick a card in the scanner and the software creates a new contact in your Outlook.

The basic idea of this thing should appeal to anyone who makes lots of new contacts in their line of work. When I took a close look at the website, it struck me that the designers really know their market. There are a lot of feature that impress me.

I like the fact that it doesn’t require its own external power supply. I take care of things when we are adding another work station to our office and I hate finding out that I have come up short on outlets.

You do not need to install any software from 3rd parties in order to use this product. The software can be downloaded directly from the site. I think it was important for this device to scan quickly. It is a time saving device that most people have been living without up until now. I think that judging from the affordable price, the simplicity and the versatility of this device, we can assume that it was designed with the intention of expanding the market to people who hadn’t recognized a need for this previously. I think it is going to be successful.
