Worst Christmas Gift Ideas Part III: Ambiguous Political Paraphenalia

Posted in Everything Else by totaldis on the November 20th, 2007

thongI know this is a very bad Christmas gift idea. This thong is part of a whole range of items available from a website that is supporting Dick Cheney’s undeclared bid for the Presidency. You might consider getting them as a joke gift for your least favorite Neocon supporter.

Dick Cheney is the Vice President of the United States of America. He has said several times that he will retire next year. He is a man who has been known to change his mind on occasion.

The light was very good for photography today. I am not a talented photographer. I have learned to recognize good light.

There is no baby in the buggy. It’s not only grandmothers who use these old carriages as a means of transporting bulky items. Grandfathers use them for bringing in potatoes and for taking heaps of fodder to their animals.

Петр Мамонов > Metallica

This man epitomizes the heavy metal ethic. He is officially my hero for the next 15 minutes. I remember a busker that used to ply his trade on the Halifax waterfront that had one of these battery operated mini amplifiers on his belt. That’s not the YouTube sound condensing, they really sound that awful. Pyotr here makes it sound pretty good considering. They long haired freaky busker used to play too much Poison. I don’t think I ever gave him any money.

A Better Mouse Trap

I don’t have mice in my house, so I don’t require a better mouse trap. I was just absent-mindedly fiddling with an object that I had left on my desk. It was something that I bought several years ago. It is, in my opinion, the best guitar capo ever invented. It is very interesting to me that it has not cornered the market. The guitar capo business might be an interesting case study about competition in a very small niche market. I think that I have owned a total of four different capos in the space of 22 years. I think three of them were purchased new. I was disappointed with two of them. I loaned the old one that worked well to one of those people who don’t return things.

The Shubb is just better than any other model of capo. I don’t have very many possessions that impress me. This is one of them.

Good Posts Make Good Neighbors

You have probably heard the term ‘good fences make good neighbors’ before, right? I think something as substantial and yet removable as this metal bollard has a lot of potential to make people behave in a neighborly fashion if it is put to it’s proper use. These can be used to prevent strangers from parking in your driveway. Strangely enough, strangers sometimes do this. TrafficGuard.net has a variety of options that serve this basic purpose, but which slightly different functions and pricing. You can get ones that are designed to collapse when someone runs into them without sustaining damage. If you are looking for an extremely inexpensive option, they have your basic yellow post. You would want these for cordoning off a larger area as well.

Holiday Cards from Tiny Prints

Reese Witherspoon, Debra Messing, Maria Shriver, Adam Sandler, Al Roker, Charles Schwab and Harry Connick Jr. have all availed themselves of the card printing services offered by Tiny Prints. This is a company that started out small at the hands of friends who had a common love of sending and receiving actual cards and notes. We live in an electronic age where beautifully printed birth announcements or business holiday cards are literally treasures to many people.

I witnessed a neat phenomenon on the internet last year. A celebrity that has an online talk show had a nice holiday greeting card printed up and he filmed himself going to all the LA area guests that had actually told him where they live to present them with his card. Actually, I only watched the part where he gave Crispin Glover a card. It was very quaint and a bit discomforting.

The TinyPrints.com site allows you to customize and instantly preview many of their products. I think photo birth announcement are something that should never go away. I also think you should wait until the baby is home and a normal color before you take the picture for the card.

I would like any semi-professional forum moderators who might be reading this to let me know whether using forum smileys on my blog is stealing. Maybe we are all stealing smiley faces from Wal :) Mart.

It has been noted that I don’t smile very much. When Wal :( Mart comes after us, I will end up being the richest man in the world.

Safety Frist!

This is something that I enjoyed viewing a great deal long before I got into blogging. Now that everything on the internet seems to be embeddable, I thought I would share it. During Carnival, there are roving bands of 14 year old boys in gorilla masks. Sometimes they are driving a pimped out farm tractor.

Backgammon in 12 Languages

Posted in Everything Else by totaldis on the October 15th, 2007

I have been meaning to rent the movie Babel. A main theme of this movie is the difficulties that we as humans run into as a result of language barriers. BackgammonMasters.com is trying to do its part to break down language barriers by including 12 different languages in the All-in-One Game Lobby. Users don’t even need to make a language specific download. The whole interface of the online experience can be switched instantly to the language of their choce.

The choices include Chinese, Portuguese, German, Arabic, French, Hebrew, Japanese, English, Greek, Turkish, Spanish and Danish.

The site combines interactive game play and real-time chat. This is the largest online community of backgammon players. There are other games on the site as well, like poker, blackjack and perudo.

It’s probably a good thing for the site to have the backgammon rules available in all these languages. I can only assume that there are regional variants on some of the finer points of play. some regions play games that are very much like backgammon, but not quite the same.

Right now the live support chat is only in English, but the site hopes to add more languages. They also hope to add Italian and Russian to the list of languages for the platform.

I was just reading a webpage about how to swear in other languages, I wonder if someone is monitoring the site for potty mouth in all 12 languages? I can say something rude in four out of twelve of these languages, how about you? Don’t swear in my comments, just tell me the number :)

He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My MiniExcavator

I don’t remember what the fancy word is for when we start to use a brand name in place of a generic description. It is pretty common. Popsicle is one that is pretty widespread. In many regions people say Kleenex instead of tissue. I guess a brand has really come into its own when that kind of thing happens.

I don’t know how localized this particular one is, but in the rural area where I grew up, we used the word Bobcat for any small front end loader. Probably the majority of them were Bobcats.

Miniexcavatorparts.com is an affordable online source for aftermarket parts for Bobcat, GEHL, Mustang, Takecuhi, Kubota and Yanmar equipment. If your Bobcat tracks are wearing out, make tracks to this website and price a new set.
