Total Dismay

What’s Happening Marky Mark?

Posted in Music, Movies, YouTube by totaldis on the August 8th, 2008

I just got home from watching The Happening. I am married to someone who MUST see the disaster movies, even though we often leave the theater or the couch somewhat dissatisfied. This was no exception, although it was largely well acted. I didn’t leave feeling insulted, just a bit underwhelmed. I think the man who became famous for plot twists decided to really confound us by not having a twist.

A hip hop soundtrack could have made such a difference. Turn the sound down on the big movie and play them both at the same time :)

Cover For Me

I was trying to make a long string of YouTube videos with each succeeding one featuring someone covering a song written by the last artist. I got sidetracked by all the misinformation. People tend to give credit to the performer in their own generation to hit with any given really good song rather than do a bit of research and see who actually gave birth to the song.

There are dozens of amateur videos whose titles indicate that they are a cover of the Black Crowes song Hard to Handle. I was a big fan during this band’s heyday and, as a fan, I made it my business to educate myself. This song, and a few other Black Crowes songs are from Otis Redding. I have to get over my indignation, because all classic rock songs will soon be identified by which version of Guitar Hero they appear on :(

Worst Youtube Video Ever of the Day

She was a girl, he was a boy, could not make it anymore obvious…

The Evolution of Dance guy deserves to have the most viewed YouTube video of all time. As of recently, he doesn’t. An Avril Lavigne fanclub colluded to use auto-refresh to get her lame video to the top. The Avril Lavigne fan club sucks and their dads should demand to have their ties back after this travesty.

I was watching the video by Tom Waits and I saw the thumbnail for this one in the related videos.

I really like this girl’s voice. I don’t want to over-explain why I decided to post it, but here is a quote from another good songwriter that might shed a little light…

I played Love Tara by Eric’s Trip,
On the day that you were born.
I had to find the cuteness, in the unadorned,
But I was torn.

Actually that probably doesn’t explain it at all.

Panned Like Gold

I cannot attest to the accuracy of the following long description of Jewel Hodges’ political life. It is an anonymous comment left on this blog post.

Mrs. Jewell Hodges reports her success within the community is that God uses her as an instrument. As God’s instrument, God has given her visions and she “reached out to the community and they shared that vision.” These visions have allowed her to serve God and humanity where ever she walks.

Through this walk she has shared the importance of what she perceives as her civic duty to be involved in politics. Through her years of involvement she has aided with getting out the vote, community rallies, candidate campaigns, and political appointments to serve on committees at local and state levels. Through her walk she has influenced city, county, state and federal elected officials.

Mrs. Hodges has served the Democratic Party in Springfield Massachusetts, Bastrop County, and Texas. For 16 years Mrs. Hodges served on the Board of Directors of Springfield Economic Development. She served as a member of Massachusetts Citizens Advisory Committee of the Executive Office of Elder Affairs for 3 years.

Mrs. Hodges has served as a delegate to Democratic state and national conventions. She has held many local and state political appointments to include Bastrop County Representative to Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council; Chairperson of Bastrop Home Economic Area Program Committee; and Statewide Health Coordinating Council to name a few. She has attended numerous Bastrop city and county commissioner’s court meetings as a public citizen advocating for those who do not always have a voice. Mrs. Hodges has aided the Democratic Party and Club by striving to involve more Afro-American voters and fight complacency among minority voters.

The voice of Mrs. Hodges is heard by others as she led them as a Bastrop County Precinct Chair and Election Judge. She has served the Bastrop Democratic Party as Secretary. Mrs. Hodges has served on the nomination committee for the Bastrop County Democratic Club aiding in the recognition of other leadership within the club needed to step up and walk the talk as she has.

The Bastrop County Democratic Club wishes to honor Mrs. Jewel Hodges for her years of dedication and life long commitment for her efforts that she calls her “civic duty” and “that politics runs the game. You can hold them accountable.”

I don’t have anything bad to say about this woman. She seems like a very smart and very decent lady.

I am going to make a general criticism about very old people being used as campaign tools. Actually, I’m just going to allude to Jerry Seinfeld’s bit where he talks about old people backing out of their driveways without looking behind them. He probably tells that joke on one of these clips. He only has about five jokes.

We decided to splurge on pizzas for our Friday snack break. I was trying to use Google to find the phone number of the bakeries that are the most renowned. When the thumbnail for this YouTube video appeared on the first page for my search, I had to check it out.

Maltese is an interesting language. It is so interesting that it seems like it is physically impossible for me to pronounce the names of my favorite foods correctly. I got someone else to call in our order.

We are semi-regulars at a restaurant that almost always has VH1 playing on the big screen above the bar with the sound switched off and a stack of CDs playing randomly on the sound system. I think we are unduly mesmerized by the television because we don’t have it at home. The 80’s show is usually on when we are waiting for our meal. We had a discussion last night about what makes some videos unbelievably dated and others less so.

Babel II

Posted in Movies, Travel, YouTube, People by totaldis on the December 28th, 2007

This is not meant to be a parody of the movie Babel. It is simply a tower of YouTube videos that replicates the effect of the movie. Juxtaposing widely divergent cultures is a very easy way to send sheltered, fearful American viewers on a head trip. I have to admit that the original movie was faithfully recreating these environments in a work of fiction, which is harder than just doing a few searches. Playing all three videos at the same time creates a pretty neat effect.

Alien Versus…

Posted in Celebrity Catfights, Movies, YouTube, A Contest by totaldis on the December 25th, 2007

Alien Versus Predator, AVP for short, made some money at the box office. $171,181,096 to be exact. I predict that the sequel will not do quite as well. I’m guessing that the budget might have been a little smaller for the ‘requiem’ of the original matchup to ensure a profit. AVP cost $70 Million to make.

There is actually not much that you can do to cut corners on these kind of movies. The leading roles do not require big name actors with big salaries, and lighting is cheap since they are filmed almost entirely in the dark. I have one suggestion, they can cut the CGI bill in half by using a two dimensional animated character as one of the battling creatures…
