Total Dismay

Best YouTube Video Ever of the Day

Posted in Celebrity Relationships, Britney Spears, Music, YouTube, Jamie Lynn Spears by totaldis on the December 23rd, 2007

These kids rock. I had never heard of them until today. Whereas most of the male rockabilly pioneers had tragic ends or scandalous lives that made them household names beyond what was warranted by their music, these two just stopped. She got married at 17 to Johnny Cash’s manager who was in his mid 30s. She quit performing with her baby brother when she had her first child at 19. The young man pictured here was no flash in the pan, he kept performing and writing for most of his life. He wrote Delta Dawn and You’re The Reason God Made Oklahoma. These two had a reunion concert in 1993, 32 years after they had stopped performing together, and they are still at it.

I think Britney Spears should look to women like Lawrencine “Lorrie” Collins for role models. It is already too late in a lot of ways for Britney as far as her legacy as a performer goes, but she can salvage a normal personal life if she would just quit the celebrity thing cold turkey.

Best YouTube Video Ever of the Day

Posted in Music, YouTube, People by totaldis on the November 25th, 2007

Talking about Christmas and debt got me song tagged with this old standard. I did a quick search and had one of those small world moments when the top ranking video for this old Merle Haggard song was a cover by a Nova Scotian. Merle Haggard is known for writing great arrangements and riffs, this video is going to be instructional for me. Thanks for sharing your talent on YouTube, Mr. Allan Spinney.

Greg Palast Wrote The Book

palast.JPGThe book in this man’s hand is a book that was written by a man who is not given much credit by the MSM in the USA. Greg Palast wrote Armed Madhouse. I watched a 27 minute video of Greg Palast speaking about voter fraud. I agree with him that the solution to that problem is the massive mobilization of voters. I hope the voters of the USA end up with Presidential candidates that inspire a high voter turnout.

A Very Nice Instrument

Posted in Cool Stuff, Music, YouTube by totaldis on the November 16th, 2007

I was getting an early start on compiling a list of Christmas tunes to play during office hours next month. I got sidetracked when I saw a Greensleeves interpretation from the guitarist featured in this video. I’m choosing to embed the story of the instrument to save you some time, because you would be curious if you just saw him playing. He collaborates with another great player on some very pleasant music such as the Greensleeves suite. They call themselves Bardou. You can also find them on iTunes.

It’s Safe to Dance

Posted in Fashion, YouTube, Dance by totaldis on the November 15th, 2007

Have you noticed that the Evolution of Dance is coming dangerously close to losing its place as the MOST VIEWED YOUTUBE VIDEO OF ALL TIME? Oh well, at least he got to go on Oprah. If you are one of the over 60,000,000 viewers, you may remember that he was wearing an orange tee shirt and bluejeans. This is not the first choice in dancewear for most professionals. I think they might be stretch jeans. I might have to go back and review. I really don’t want Avril Lavigne to have the most viewed video.

JustForKix.com is a supplier of dance wear, shoes and costumes. I looked and they do not have jeans. They have some awesome camouflage pants that look like street clothes, but are constructed with dance in mind. They also have some serious hip hop footwear. You need the right combination of grip AND slide for that style of dance.

Killing Babies for Fun and Profit

Posted in Television, YouTube by totaldis on the November 13th, 2007

dead-baby.JPGNo real babies were killed in the making of this epic Family Guy show.

FOX has reached an end game with this level of violence. Family Guy has been canceled by FOX twice in the past.

It infuriates me that society in the United States is so permissive with regard to violence on TV and yet they are astoundingly prudish about sex. The dead baby on FOX will not result in any litigation and yet CBS was ordered to pay a record $550,000 fine for showing Janet Jackson’s breast. Family Guy is just a cartoon, but Janet Jackson’s breast isn’t real either.

The saddest thing is that violence is permitted because the kids are buying it. Luckily, some video game companies are making big changes. Rock Star has a new gay themed video game called Manhunt2, lots of gay sex and very little violence. It’s going to be a hot item this Christmas.

Finding Free Sounds

Posted in Music, Avril Lavigne, Art, YouTube, Conspiracy, Dance by totaldis on the November 13th, 2007

This video is kinda stupid. I made it. I was at a different computer when I threw it together and I didn’t have any access to any of my own music. I am a member of The Free Sound Project, so I grabbed something appropriate from there to use as an audio track for this relatively pointless YouTube video. I just tried a few ominous search terms until I saw a synth track that was the right length and had the right tone. I think I will spend some of my free time reading up on creative commons licensing. I have to confess that I do not fully understand how to properly make use of material that has such a license.

Regional YouTube Platforms

Posted in YouTube by totaldis on the November 7th, 2007

At first, I thought the addresses like http://fr.youtube.com/ and http://ca.youtube.com/ and http://uk.youtube.com/ weren’t that different from plain old YouTube.com. It turns out that things like MOST VIEWED are actually specific to the respective regions. I thought it would be interesting to cherry pick a few items from most viewed of the day as a way of making broad generalizations about people…

France apparently likes FEET.

Canada likes FLOUNDERS and Poker.

And Britain like BOOBS and Harry Potter.

And I think they like Tomatoes in Spain. I might be mistaken.

Best YouTube Video Ever of the Day

This video contains disturbing images of real violence.

I don’t have much of a soapbox with this blog, but I try to do what I can to resensitize people to just how horrible humans beings can sometimes treat each other. I found this video while doing a search on the vocalist who is featured on the audio. Danielle de Niese is of Sri Lankan and Dutch heritage. She is a chart topping opera singer who now lives in the USA. She is currently performing the role of Cleopatra in a London opera.
